Course Focus
This course will cover the use of HyperText Markup Language for
creating Web pages. The majority of the course will focus on the
development of coding skills. We will also address design and
legal issues as they pertain to the Web and discuss the implications
of new Web standards and technology.

Final Project Presentation
Although there are many Web editors available now, most Web development projects require direct code editing (using HTML) for trouble shooting purposes and to achieve desired effects. You will be tested on your knowledge of HTML at many points during this course.
For each session you are expected to bring the required assignment for that session. During class you will be able to ask questions about problems you encountered while executing the assignment. You will then be expected to refine the assignment and incorporate it into the final project.
Internet Access
You will post much of your work in your server space rather than
submitting it in paper form. If you do not have Internet access
at home, plan on spending time on campus to post your work. All
students should have a WCC student account since this is the address
I will use to send you e-mail. If you don't have one, you need
to get one. Go to http://nwmail.wccnet.org/
and follow the instructions. If you have problems, check with
the technicians in TI 108.
Advanced Work
If the assignments and material presented in this course are below
your skill level let me know and I will provide you with advanced
work and a different grading criteria.
Deadlines
All assignments will have specific due dates. An assignment
or exercise should be posted by 9 am the morning of the day it
is due. If the work is turned in one day late without consulting
with the instructor, the grade will be lowered one grade. Each
week late after the due date will result in another grade lower.
(For example, an assignment, one day late, that would have earned
an A will earn a B. If that same assignment is a week late it
will earn a C and so on.) Keep in mind that there may be several
assignments overlapping and each may have its own due date. See
your Course Work page for due dates. See the Course Outline
page for due dates.
Supplies
(Bring to every class) One 31/2 inch floppy disk, labeled with
your name and class number. Also see the required text below.

Considerations: extra work or effort beyond assigned work.
I have never given an incomplete. If you expect to have this option available to you I would suggest you take this course from another instructor.
Access to Grades
Your grades will be available to you via the Web through an
individualized, password protected account. Your last name (all
lower case) will be your log in name and the last four digits
of your social security number will be your password. If you choose
not to have your grades made available to you in this way then
you have the responsibility of contacting me and requesting that
your grades be sent to you. These will be sent within one week
of your request.
Attendance
Students are expected to attend class regularly. Assignments and
material covered must be completed outside of class if class time
is missed. Attendance is taken every class. If you know you will
be absent on a certain day, please leave me a message before class
begins.

Feedback on this course is always appreciated.
Class Activity
You are expected to come to class at the beginning of the
class meeting time and to stay until the end of class. There will
be scheduled breaks during class time. During class time, all
students will be expected to work on assignments for this class
as well as participate in discussions and class activities. Working
on assignments for other classes, surfing the web or using e-mail
during class time are not appropriate activities.
Homework
Students will be assigned reading from required texts. Written
assignments (covering reading material and design concepts) might
also be assigned. Although some class time for working on projects
will be scheduled, students will need to work outside of class
time to complete assignments, projects and tutorials.
Open Lab Time & Help
In order to allow enough computer time for students, the college
provides monitored, open lab time. Lab hours will be posted in
the classrooms, outside next to the door. Please keep in mind
when you use open lab time:
* No eating or drinking at the computers, no downloading or installing software on the machines.
* The lab monitor is not a tutor and may not know every version of software.
* Printing on color printers is not permitted during open lab.
* Save your work and gather your materials a few minutes before lab time ends so as not to interfere with incoming classes.
Help with some of the technical and software issues is available in the TI 108 lab and the SC302 lab in Student Center bldg. The LRC Computer Commons also has assistants who are trained on some of the INP software. Call 734-973-3420. You may also access the Learning Support Services for tutoring help at: http://www.wccnet.org/dept/eels/lss/
The open lab hours in SC 302 for Fall semester 2001 are
as follows:
M - Th: 12 - 1pm, 4 - 5:30pm
F: 1:30 - 5:30pm
Sa, Su: 12 - 6pm

Technical Issues
Sheila Bourgoin has developed some very
helpful documents on the following issues:
Mac-PC
(transferring files between Macintosh and Windows platforms)
FETCH (Using the FETCH program to FTP
files to your server space)
Naming files: to minimize problems with FTP programs and
operating system incompatibilities:
-never use non-alphanumeric characters or spaces in file names
(eg; instead of "products & services.html" use "products.html")
and
-always use lower case. (If WS-FTP LE begins changing your names
to upper case upon FTPing then go into WS-FTP LE preferences and
choose "force lower case" option.)
Replacing older content on your disk: When replacing a
folder with another with the same name (eg; when you are finished
working on your content and will put the folder back on your disk
and you want to replace the folder on your disk with the newer
content) drag your newer folder onto your disk NEXT TO the older
folder with the same name. DO NOT DRAG THE NEWER FOLDER ON TOP
OF THE OLDER FOLDER.
