Site Proposal

The company that I work for manufactures compressed air driven pumps used in the
groundwater monitoring and remediation industry. These are commonly used around
landfills, chemical processors and even for gasoline spills around gas stations.
Often when a customer needs service on a pump a simple drawing of the pump can
be used to help identify how to disassemble and repair it. The drawing is also
of use for ordering replacement parts. This type of drawing is often referred to
as an exploded view diagram. This will typically show the device disassembled
and a parts list. The site I propose to develop will list one of more pumps that
will be linked to an exploded view drawing of the pump. The number of pumps and
level of detail will depend on available time.

The drawings that I plan to use are created in one of two different computer
aided design software packages. The first is Autocad. This is a two dimensional
drawing package and may be the simplest to use. The other option is to use
drawings generated in a more advanced software package called Solidwords.
Solidworks is a three dimensional parametric drawing package. The preference
is to use drawings generated in Solidworks because they are more advanced technically.

The Solidworks software has the ability to export drawing files in following formats:

This is an example of an ordered list that does not start with 1.

  1. .ACIS
  2. .DWF
  3. .DWG
  4. .IGES
  5. Parasolids
  6. .STL .TIF
  7. .VRML.

For the site to be a success I will need to be able to use one of these formats
to place images on the web page. The .VRML (virtual reality modeling language)
is suppose to be one format that can be used with the type of drawing generate from
Solidworks. If this proves to be too complex or time is not available I will attempt
to use .jpg or .gif files that may be available. In that I know very little about
HTML and web page development at time I am unsure if any of this is even possible
within the context of class.

Also if time is available I may attempt to include an "E-drawing". This is a
3-dimensional drawing that may be sent to the user. This format allows the
user to view and rotate a 3-dimensional drawing of the part without having to
install any additional software on their computer. We have experimented with
this at work. Again this may go beyond context of this class but what the heck.

Site Goals:

This is an example of an ordered list that starts with a capital letter.

  1. The primary goal is to supply accurate detailed information in the form of an exploded view drawing on one or more pumps that will be available over the internet. This will allow customers, sales staff, representatives and service staff to easily access this information.
  2. The site should be designed to easily allow the addition of more products.
  3. Attempt to use 3-dimensional drawings and E-Drawings.

Similar Sites:

This is an example of an un-nested and un-ordered list.

Note:
My objective for this project (and the class) is to explore the technology
and how it can be used. Based on this I am less concerned with creating a
successful site as oppose to learning how the technology can be used for the
company web site. I have considered switching to an audit for the class but
may wait until later in the semester.
